Level 1 (HE4)
OCA currently offer four Open courses in Level 1 Moving Image.
Moving Image 1: Setting the Scene is for anyone who has an interest in exploring the creative techniques used in producing moving image media. The course develops an awareness of creative techniques and exploration of artistic approaches, using a range of visual and narrative devices to create mood, atmosphere and meaning within a sequence. It also encourages you to view media critically, identify the techniques that are used and how they affect the audience and enable you to use some of these techniques effectively in your own work.
Scriptwriting: An Introduction to Screenwriting aims to enable you to understand screenwriting as a visual medium, introduce you to the basic techniques of writing for screen and develop your understanding of the building blocks of screenwriting: the scene, the dramatic arc, character and dialogue while developing your ability to employ reflective skills, absorb constructive feedback and re-draft your work accordingly. By the end of the Open course you’ll not only have acquired the nuts and bolts of screenwriting but you’ll also have penned your own 15-minute screenplay.
An Introduction to Film Culture: This Open course is an introduction to the analysis and understanding of film as a creative means of communication. For anyone who is curious and passionate about cinema, this course will provide a foundation for ongoing interpretation and critical analysis and a route map to explore the endless range and influences that film has brought to bear as a truly global art-form.
Fact and Fiction: This unit will investigate the blurred lines that exist between fact and fiction as presented through the moving image. From cinematic fictional drama to documentary film to artist’s film and video, it will help you to develop visual and conceptual research strategies and investigate diverse ways to gather and manipulate audio/visual material in order to create meaning.
The unit is a practical one but is also concerned with furthering an awareness of creative techniques and exploring artistic approaches. It will encourage you to view media critically, to identify the myriad techniques and devices that are employed, how they affect the audience, and how they can be incorporated into your own video work.
