Creative Writing 3 B: Independent Project

Course Level: 3 (HE6) | HE Credits: 60 | Approx. Duration: 15 months at 10hrs/week

Independent Project is the second of OCA’s two advanced courses in creative writing. Like Retrospect & Prospect, Independent Project has been designed to help you develop whatever piece(s) of writing you wish to work on. It’s not a detailed, prescriptive course that lays down a step-by-step syllabus of work for everyone to follow. Rather, it offers a flexible scaffolding that will help facilitate each individual’s unique body of work. The course is based on the mentoring model. This means that it’s up to each individual, in discussion with their tutor, to negotiate the particular pathway they’ll take through the pages that follow. The course offers opportunities to build on the skills and knowledge gained from Retrospect & Prospect.

The aims of the course are to:

  • A1 Consolidate and further develop the ability to devise and sustain extended independent creative work
  • A2 Develop advanced skills relating to structuring longer pieces of work
  • A3 Further develop research and organisational skills
  • A4 Further develop skills of self-criticism and the ability to respond to advice
  • A5 Enable you to engage with the ideas and techniques at the forefront of critical debate

On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • LO1 Plan and structure the continuation of an extended body of creative writing, showing an understanding of the form (A1)
  • LO2 Organise materials and plan realistic schedules for writing and redrafting a longer work (A2)
  • LO3 Demonstrate thorough research and organisational skills (A3)
  • LO4 Form sound judgments incorporating on your own work and on responses to it, and incorporate that criticism in polished redrafts and revisions of your work (A4)
  • LO5 Sustain informed arguments on ideas and techniques at the forefront of critical debate (A5)
