Study Visit: Winifred Knights

By | Fine Art, study visit, Study Visits, We Are OCA

There are still spaces available for the study visit this weekend at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. Winifred Knights was the most promising painter of her generation at a time when it was difficult for women to have a career in art. Her work embraced the new modernism of the early 20th century together with the traditional concerns and draughtsmanship taught at the Slade School of Art.

Susan Askew

By | drawing, Fine Art, Student Work, We Are OCA

Many students at first can be a bit tentative about using mixed media. Lack of confidence, a fear of the unknown perhaps or else they are just not sure how it will all turn out. Susan Askew, a student on the Drawing 1 course, has no such doubts and instead has dived straight in, fearlessly combining collage with various drawing and painting media.

Making the most of the OCA community

By | Creative Writing, Education, Film, Fine Art, Music, Photography, Textiles, Visual Communications

At the OCA, our main way of connecting with each other is online which can feel more distant to meeting up face-to-face. But, if you’re a modern-day-human embracing social media, then how much of your social life is conducted and organised online now anyway? Whilst there’s plenty of debate to be had about whether this way of communicating is more beneficial, there’s no denying its popularity.

You’re an Eee Aye Dee Ot Babe….

By | Education, Fine Art, Galleries, We Are OCA

I went to the kind of school where you could give up history early on to concentrate on your sewing. My conceptualisation of history is roughly ‘Vikings, the Bayeux Tapestry, Henry VIII and WW2’. The near complete absence of women in the world, not to mention the absence of most of the world according to the history I was taught left me distrustful of it at an early age.
