Chris Coekin

I’m an active UK based practitioner producing personal work for books and exhibitions. I’ve been involved within the photography profession for over 20 years. My work is predominately concerned with contemporary British culture, is frequently based upon personal experience and collaborative processes. I often combine text, ephemera, audio and archival imagery within my projects to examine the notion of reality representation performance and the everyday.

My work has been exhibited widely including shows at: The Photographers’ Gallery, London, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Belfast Exposed, Foam Museum, Amsterdam, People’s History Museum, Manchester, Stephen Bulger Gallery, Canada. I’ve had solo shows at the Lodz Festival, Poland, Format festival, Derby, and the Dali Photography festival, China. Recently my work The Altogether was exhibited at the Chinese National Museum of Industry, Shenyang.

To date I have published three books, Knock Three Times (Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2006) The Hitcher (Walkout/The Photographers’ Gallery, 2007) and The Altogether (Walkout/Books, 2011).

I have also worked on commercial commissions for advertising and editorial clients including The Guardian, The Times, The Observer, The Telegraph and several design companies. My work has also featured in art magazines, TV programmes and on the radio including; BBC radio 2, Resonance FM, Sky Arts1, Canadian Broadcast Company, China State TV, Creative Review, the BJP, Next Level and Source.

I have a BA and MA in Photography, and hold a PGCE teaching qualification. My pedagogic experience includes lecturing at FE, BA and MA level. I also regularly deliver talks at art institutions and universities.
